linguaggio
Matteo Groppi è un fotografo italiano che da dodici anni esplora il confine tra ciò che mostriamo e ciò che nascondiamo. Il suo lavoro si concentra su corpi imperfetti, ordinari — esclusi dal canone ma pieni di storia — fotografati con la stessa dignità riservata ai soggetti accettati. Una ricerca radicata nell'esperienza personale del disagio corporeo, diventata uno sguardo politico sulla visibilità e il diritto di essere visti.
La mia ricerca parte sempre da me. Ho sempre avuto un corpo che non rientrava nel canone — quella sensazione di disagio, di non essere visibile nel modo giusto, è diventata nel tempo la lente attraverso cui guardo gli altri. Sono attratto da chi è escluso dal campo visivo collettivo: corpi grassi, tatuati, operati, segnati dal tempo. Corpi che esistono, che occupano spazio, ma che raramente vengono trattati come soggetti degni di attenzione sostenuta.
Le scelte tecniche — luce, formato, stampa — non sono mai estetiche per il gusto dell'estetica. Servono la domanda attorno a cui ogni serie è costruita. La fotografia, per me, è un atto di restituzione: dare spazio e dignità a chi non si aspetta di trovarsi al centro di un'immagine. Non per pietà — ma perché quei corpi esistono, meritano uno sguardo serio, e perché quell'atto di vedere cambia talvolta qualcosa in chi viene guardato.
Matteo Groppi is an Italian photographer who has spent twelve years exploring the boundary between what we show and what we hide. His work focuses on imperfect, ordinary bodies — excluded from the canon yet full of history — photographed with the same dignity afforded to accepted subjects. A research rooted in personal experience of bodily discomfort, grown into a political gaze on visibility and the right to be seen.
My research always starts from me. I have always had a body that did not fit the canon — that experience of embarrassment, of feeling invisible in the right way, became the lens through which I look at others. I am drawn to those excluded from the collective field of vision: fat bodies, tattooed bodies, operated bodies, bodies marked by time. Bodies that exist, that take up space, but that are rarely treated as subjects worthy of sustained attention.
Technical choices — light, format, printing — are never aesthetic for their own sake. They serve the question each series is built around. Photography, for me, is an act of restitution: giving space and dignity to those who do not expect to find themselves at the center of an image. Not out of pity — but because those bodies exist, deserve a serious gaze, and because that act of seeing occasionally changes something in the person being seen.
